"If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less
arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place."

Margaret Mead

"When I dare to be powerful--to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less important whether
I am afraid."

Audre Lorde

Cities surveyed identified low-paying jobs, high housing costs,
unemployment, food-stamp cuts, poverty, and low public assistance benefit levels as contributing to the increased demand for food.

Sixty percent of cities reported decreases in quantity of food provided
and/or the number of times a family can receive food

  • You will be offered meaningful, valued work
  • The food you help select, sort and pack will go to hungry people in Western North Carolina
  • You will work with organized, trained, caring professionals
  • You will work in a clean and safe area
  • You will enjoy "hands-on" work and meet other volunteers in a friendly, relaxed environment
  • You will feel great about yourself, because you can make a positive contribution to your community!

Why Volunteer?

  • To support the MANNA FoodBank mission, "Save the food, feed the hungry."
  • You can make a tangible contribution. Volunteers contribute the equivalent work force of approximately six full time employees per month at a monetary value of $16.05 per hour.
  • To provide an important link to the community. Our volunteers bring special enthusiasm, dedication, warmth and energy to every task. It's truly a "labor of love!"

What Motivates Volunteers?
If you ask 100 people, you will probably get 100 different answers. Here are some we hear most often at MANNA:

  • Personal satisfaction form meaningful work which contributes directly to my community
  • Humanitarian insight into the problems of waste, hunger and poverty
  • Putting beliefs into action
  • Educational and interesting work experience
  • Volunteer work includes all ages, diverse religious and ethnic groups. Individuals with varied ability levels and economic resources can provide useful services
  • You can be a productive team member, meet other people who share your convictions, and have fun!

What Services do Volunteers Perform?

  • First of all, we ask volunteers to work in our warehouse processing area, which represents both the heart of the operation and our greatest need. You will be trained to conscientiously check, clean, label, sort and box salvage food and non-food packaged items which will then be made available to our member agencies for distribution in WNC. You also help us keep our warehousing and agency shopping areas organized and clean.
  • Special fund-raising events, such as Blue Jean Ball and food drives, such as the Ingles Giving Tree, are always in need of helping hands and minds to perform a variety of services.
  • After you have some experience with our food processing operation, you may also want to discuss other options with our Volunteer Coordinator. Specialized service areas include: food pick-ups from local donors, speaking on behalf of MANNA in the community, agency liaison work, office and computer-based work.

Volunteer Qualifications

  • Good judgment and manual dexterity
  • Willingness to follow instructions and work cooperatively as a team member
  • Commitment to quality and cleanliness
  • A reasonable "dress code" for your protection and cleanliness (sturdy boots or shoes-no open toes please; sweatshirts and jeans are appropriate)
