THE STUDY:The MANNA FoodBank report is based on surveys of 229 clients interviewed at partner emergency food agency sites and 219 partner agencies reporting on 348 different programs. Surveys and
interviews were taken during the Spring/Summer 2005.
HOW MANY CLIENTS RECEIVE EMERGENCY FOOD FROM MANNA FOODBANK?
- MANNA FoodBank's partner agencies provide emergency food for an estimated 115,500 different people annually.
- Approximately 14,100 different people receive emergency food assistance through MANNA's partner agencies in any given week.
WHERE DO MANNA FOODBANK'S PARTNER AGENCIES OBTAIN THEIR FOOD?
- Food banks are by far the single most important source of food for MANNA's partner agencies, accounting for 77% of the food used by emergency food pantries, 40% of soup kitchens' food, and 53% of
emergency shelters' food.
MANY MANNA FOODBANK CLIENTS ARE FOOD INSECURE OR ARE EXPERIENCING HUNGER
- Among all clients served by MANNA FoodBank partner agencies, 76% are food insecure, according to the U.S. government's official food security scale.
- 34% of the clients served by MANNA FoodBank partner agencies are experiencing hunger
- Among households with children served by MANNA FoodBank partner agencies, 71% are food insecure and 37% are experiencing hunger
WHO RECEIVES EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE?
- 32% of the member of households served by MANNA FoodBank's partner agencies are children under 18.
- 42% of households include at least one employed adult..
- 70% have incomes below the official federal poverty level during the previous month.
- 17% are homeless.
MANY CLIENTS REPORT HAVING TO CHOOSE BETWEEN FOOD AND OTHER NECESSITIES
- 53% of clients served by MANNA FoodBank partner agencies chose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel.
- 28% had to choose between paying for food and paying their rent or mortgage bill.
- 30% had to choose between paying for food and paying for medicine or medical care.
DO MANNA FOODBANK CLIENTS ALSO RECEIVE FOOD ASSISTANCE FROM THE GOVERNMENT?
Out of total clients served by MANNA's partner agencies, 37% receive Food Stamp Program benefits, but it's likely that many more are eligible, but have not applied.
MANY OF MANNA'S PARTNERS' CLIENTS ARE IN POOR HEALTH
- Out of total clients served by MANNA's partner agencies, 46% have one household member in poor health.
VOLUNTEERS ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN MANNA FOODBANK'S NETWORK
- Out of total clients served by MANNA's partner agencies, volunteers are used at 82% of emergency food pantries, at 68% of soup kitchens, and at 58% of emergency shelters.
- Many programs rely entirely on volunteers; only 60% of emergency food pantry programs and 28% of soup kitchens have no paid staff at all.
WHAT KINDS OF ORGANIZATIONS OPERATE MANNA'S PARTNER EMERGENCY FOOD PROGRAMS?
- 69% of emergency food pantries, 49% of soup kitchens, and 37% of emergency shelters are run by faith-based agencies affiliated with churches, mosques, synagogues, and other religious
organizations.
HAVE AGENCIES BEEN EXPERIENCING CHANGES IN THE NEED FOR THEIR SERVICES?
- 68% of emergency food pantries, 66% of soup kitchens, and 49% of emergency shelters affiliated with MANNA FoodBank reported that there had been an increase since 2001 in the number of
clients who have come to their emergency food program sites.
